Graduation Plans

I've been thinking a lot about graduation (obviously, otherwise why would I have put a graduation day countdown calendar on my blog?). My original plans for graduation weekend was that Jamie and I would drive or fly up, spend Friday night in a hotel, go to graduation Saturday morning, go out to eat to celebrate, then go home. But then I got thinking. Jamie can't stay with me when it's time to line up. He can't sit with me with the graduates. He'd have to sit in the stands and wait for me. From everything I've read on the school's website, the stands are pretty large. I don't know anybody there, and I don't want Jamie sitting by himself.

At one time, it was important to me for Jamie to see me graduate. It was important for him to see all my hard work pay off. It still is important, but Jamie's safety is more important. So now I think we aren't going to attend the graduation ceremony. We can take the money we would have used for gas, food and hotel, and instead do something together to celebrate that weekend. I'm still hoping we can go to Disney World to celebrate - I just don't know what to do about the dogs. The main problem is not Ziggy, but Buddy. I'll think on this more, and get back to you.

Disney World is a whole lot of fun, but it can also be very expensive.

If you are even thinking about a trip to see the Mouse, I urge you to pick up a used copy of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. You should be able to get the 2008 edition for next to nothing.

The other advice is to start visiting the website disboards.com

The forum has over 200,000 members that are crazy about Disney World. You will learn alot about planning your trip and they will become a great resource for questions.

I just got back in January and lot of the Disney information packed into my head has been slowly leaking, but if I can help, just ask.

Jamie and I went in 2001, and it was exhausting! A lot of that had to do with the fact that I am a single mom, and Jamie was 3 at the time. Me - alone - with a cranky, overstimulated preschooler. NOT FUN! I'm really looking forward to getting to go with him as an older tween, so we can do more stuff together and I can relax more.

I think doing a vacation instead of graduation sounds cool. Disney really isn't my bag, but I'm not sure what else to suggest. Maybe pick a city you've never visited and go there for the weekend?

My guess is that you don't need convincing to go to Disney World since you have already been. It is funny, because before we went the first time, my wife was convinced that she would not like Disney World and thought the idea was stupid. I think it was the Mennonite in her. Now we plan to buy a membership one day.

I know of no other vacation destination that generates such heated responses from people.

(Clarification: Susan, I know that you weren't knocking others from going to Disney but in planning our last trip I was amazed on how heated some people became when they found out we were going to see the Mouse. Some people generally seemed pissed off that anyone would actually want to vacation there. 100% of the time, those people had actually never been. I do wonder what the underlying reason is for the Disney World haters. Again, I am not suggesting that you fall into this camp Susan, it just got me thinking about it.)

Okay, so give me the date for graduation again. Is it just me, or are the word verification things getting to be more and more word-like?

Roy, since I've never actually been to Disney World, I guess I can't claim that I wouldn't like it. Big media conglomerates irk me (understatement of the year) but it's not like it pisses me off that someone else would want to go there. I hope I don't come off that way. I'm just saying my ideal vacation includes things that stimulate the hippie nerd within: museums and nature hikes. Disney is no part of that.

Jenn, sorry to hijack your blog to have a conversation with someone else :)

no problem. I don't consider it being hijacked, merely "facilitating conversation." Go ahead and talk amongst yourselves. Doesn't bother me a bit.

So when are you going to tell me when graduation is? BTW is "fillowed" a word?

Jenn-Jenn, the Mother Hen said...

I didn't tell you because I thought you saw it on my blog. I put up a countdown timer counting down the days until December 19, when I graduate. I'll just be glad when my degree is finished; that'll give me more time to decide what the heck to DO with it! LOL

My word is "achro". I didn't know computers could sneeze.
